To transmit

The exam

To talk on the amateur bands you need a call sign, and for that, a multiple-choice exam. Morse is no longer required. A few weeks of study will do.

In numbers

Step by step

  1. Study

Both parts: the rules (bands, power, call signs) and the theory (electricity, antennas, propagation). The books are below.

  2. Practise

Do mock exams until you steadily get 25 or more out of 30 in each part.

  3. Apply

On the Ministry's e-office, with a digital certificate or electronic ID, and pay the fee with form 790.

  4. Sit it

At the provincial telecoms inspection office, on a computer.

  5. Get licensed

Passing gives you the HAREC certificate, valid in CEPT countries, and you apply for your call sign.

  6. On air

You can now use handheld and mobile rigs. A fixed home station also needs its own licence and antenna insurance.

What it costs

Your call sign

It starts with EA, EB, EC… then a digit for where you live and some letters. In Catalonia, 3: EA3, EB3, EC3.

The paperwork

To practise

Once you have a call sign: gear

Radio shops. A VHF/UHF handheld is almost everyone's first rig.
